Play Crazy Eights with the rules at hand

Check the rule below as you play. Empty your hand by matching the active suit or the top card’s rank. Eights let you choose the next suit. The game area remains available above the explanation. Each player starts with five cards from a standard 52-card deck. The starting discard is not an eight. Keep the goal in mind before your next move.

Two-player free play with a local computer opponent. No draw-two stacking or reverse cards. A refreshed page starts a new round.

Give this approach a try

Read the position before choosing your next action. After an eight, match the called suit or play another eight. The eight’s printed suit is not the active suit.

Your goal

Take a moment to check the current turn. Empty your hand by matching the active suit or the top card’s rank. Eights let you choose the next suit.

From the start of a round

  1. Each player starts with five cards from a standard 52-card deck. The starting discard is not an eight.
  2. Play one matching card. An eight is always playable; choose its suit using the suit selector before tapping the card.
  3. After an eight, match the called suit or play another eight. The eight’s printed suit is not the active suit.
  4. Draw one card at a time when needed. Drawing does not end your turn; keep drawing or play a legal card.
  5. The stock is not recycled. With no stock and no legal card, pass. Two consecutive passes end the round in a draw.
  6. The first empty hand wins. New round deals again.

Controls

The example and rules describe the same game you can play above. Tap a playable card. Set the suit selector before playing an eight. Draw and Pass have separate buttons. The game area remains available above the explanation.

Follow the example

Use the controls beside the game rather than guessing the rules. If 5♣ is on top, you can play another club, another five, or any eight. Calling hearts with an eight makes hearts the active suit. Keep the goal in mind before your next move.

Check this before moving on

The board gives you the information needed for the next action. Do not assume that every eight keeps its printed suit. The called suit is shown beside the discard pile.

Questions that come up during play

On this page, what is the aim of Crazy Eights?

Empty your hand by matching the active suit or the top card’s rank. Eights let you choose the next suit. A new round resets the current game.

During a round, how do the controls work?

Tap a playable card. Set the suit selector before playing an eight. Draw and Pass have separate buttons. A new round resets the current game.

When I start, can you show an example?

If 5♣ is on top, you can play another club, another five, or any eight. Calling hearts with an eight makes hearts the active suit. Keep the current game state in view while applying this rule.

For this game, which mistake should I avoid?

Do not assume that every eight keeps its printed suit. The called suit is shown beside the discard pile. Use the labelled controls for your next action.

During a round, what rules and limits are used here?

Two-player free play with a local computer opponent. No draw-two stacking or reverse cards. A refreshed page starts a new round. The controls work with mouse or touch.

For this game, how many people can play here?

You vs computer. This is local browser play, not internet matchmaking. The worked example offers another way to follow the rule.

For this game, why can I still play after drawing?

Drawing alone does not finish a turn here. Play a legal card, or continue drawing if needed. The controls work with mouse or touch.

When I start, can I pass while I have a matching card?

No. Pass is available only when the stock is empty and your hand contains no legal card. A new round resets the current game.

During a round, how do I choose the suit for an eight?

Use the suit selector first, then tap the eight. You can start a new round from the game controls.

During a round, what happens when both players are blocked?

If the stock is empty and both players pass consecutively, the round is a draw. The instructions above use these same rules.
